Pension Bill For World War I Deplored By Writer By BILL WILLIAMSON, SR. World War I Veterans have been given a most bitter pill in a bill that recently passed Congress by the mere skin of its teeth, which will not become effective until July 1, 1960, and instead of increasing World War I Veterans pensions will reduce same in many instances. Al though veterans now receiving $78.75 non-service-connected bene fits do not have to change over to the new law. Throughout the southwest where I have been for the past six months, my World War I buddies are very unhappy about how this new law was forced through Congress and they are determined to have their own bill HR 1181 voted on before next July 1st., which will pay them $100.00 per month after they have reached the age of 60 years. How ever, this provision may be modi fied to the age of 65 as the average WW I Veteran’s age is now 63 years and 9 months. While I am just a member of Veterans of World War I, U.S.A., I am making myself a one-man com mittee and urging all barracks of this organization to recruit their membership to maximum capacity and to invite Congressmen and Sen ators to attend meetings and to ex press themselves as to whether or not they are for this bill, and to count noses in the communities and find cut just who is for them and When you think of prescriptions, think of VARNER’S. Adv. who is not. It might be a good idea for veterans to circulate petitions among the voters of every com munity and obtain signatures from those who want to see the veterans obtain their rights and forward these petitions to the congressmen} and senators. Both the Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars are for HR 1181, and I feel sure that if this bill is ever brought out of committee and left to a vote that it will pass and there fore nullify this recent bill, which is decidedly inimical to the WW I Veterans interests. Good Question A story now being told of life be hind the Iron Curtain: Josef—“If the Western powers attack us, our agents will carry! atom bombs concealed in suitcases to Paris, London, Rome, New York and all the other big cities of the capitalist imperialists and destroy them.” Petrov—“I guess we’ll have i enough bombs by then, but how about suitcases?” Keeps Her Guessing A middle-aged railroad conductor dropped by the perfume counter, picked up a sample atomizer and gave himself a couple ot| squirts. With a wink at the surprised saleslady, he remarked, “Like to keep my wife guessing,” and went on his way. Scute ©w -He&day Jlhuh * Skop-&t CU-istwias EA£LM/ SO MUCH GLAMOUR —FOR SO LITTLE!
